New venue, new season

Barneys a great choice

Not since the 2000 season when the legendary Chandler inline facility, the Spectrum last had its doors open, has an inline tournament been conducted this far east in the Valley.  There were many firsts, one being that the Barney Family Sports Complex (BFSC) had never hosted a youth inline hockey tournament before and two, it was the first time players had the privilege of playing on the high tech 'Roller ice' surface.  The overwhelming response was that it was outstanding.  The folks at Barney's made everyone feel very much at home and their hospitality was above the bar.

 

8u Division

Many wondered whether the Prescott Storm program could reload their cannons and produce yet another stellar group of young inline athletes, since they had lost a number of their players from last season.  Not to worry.  Prescott found more than enough gunpowder to restoke the cannons that dominated the playing field so commandingly last seasonl.  Prescott's peerless team leader and captain, Jared Shuter, is back and he indeed guided his team.  It wasn't his scoring, or lack of it, but his presence, mainly on defense, that allowed teammates Luke Fain, Owen Zoubek, Dominic Calia and Makenzie Ammons to put up a very balanced scoring attack as they handed the Yuma Blaze a 5-0 loss in the championship game.  Of course, add in the goaltending of their stellar gatekeeper, Sarah Jacobelli, and the Storm could own the division, much the same as Casey's Crushers have done in the past.  Yuma Blaze have a very capable scoring threat in the three amigos of Brenden Garen, Isabella Clark and Ven Chavez.  Havasu Dust Devils struggled but their goalie, Noah Sczesny, was outstanding between the pipes, taking twice as many shots on goal and making twice as many saves as any other goalie in the division.

 

10u Division

Yuma Blaze Black made it very clear that they could be in a class of their own in this division, with a 6-0 whacking of their closest rival, Prescott Storm, in the championship game.  They displayed their lethal offensive weapons by the names of Spencer Hall, Miguel Cazares and Coralie Pancrazie, as they dominated the scoring leader board.  Most important was the goaltending of young veteran, Garrett Ruby, who perhaps has more experience in the 10u division than anyone who has played, since this is his 3rd season playing with the 10u Yuma Blaze Black.  Prescott Storm had some of their stars from last season's outstanding 8u squad, move up and did give Yuma Black a test in round robin play, losing 1-4 with a supreme effort. 

 

12u Division

Surprisingly, the 12u division, normally the biggest division at any tournament, had but 3 teams contending for 1st place honors. When the dust had cleared, it was obvious that Casey's Crushers Blue had assembled a team that is as formidable as any that has been seen in many seasons.  Crushers Blue were never really threatened in any game.  In the championship game, the Crushers Red team, in actuality a 10u team, deciding to play up in the 12's, pushed Crushers Blue as far as they could before relenting and going down 1-3 in the championship game.  Crushers Blue, Alex MacDonald, perhaps the most lethal offensive scoring threat that the Casey's Crusher program has ever seen since their inception in 1995, topped the scoring leader board for the umpteenth tournament, and put up more assists (7) than any other player in the division.  It will be interesting to see if any other program can challenge the Crusher strongehold on this division.

 

14u Division

Like the Crushers dominance of the 12u division for so many seasons, so too that the 14u division has been so dominated by the Rollerplex Panthers.  One age generation folds into another, and the Panther program continues to exude excellence. The one challenger that put the Panthers in their sight, were the Sharp Shooters. Their game was a battle down to the wire as the Panthers simply had that one extra big play from Todd Burgess, who put in the go ahead goal for the Panthers before being deadlocked 3-3 in the 2nd period of play and gave the Panthers the only unbeaten record for the division.  The division seemed to feel itself out as there were 3 ties during the round robin play.  As is usually expected, Panthers' Robbie Goldsmith topped the scoring leader board with an eye popping 14 goals and 3 assists as a bevy of other Panthers ended up in the top 10 in scoring as well.
