Centennial and Canyon del Oro win inaugural high school inline state championships
Finally, a recognized high school inline state championship at the AIHA state finals. The Varsity division, the one that featured pure high school players, all from the same school, went at it on Saturday, May 10th. The three high school teams, Centennial, Prescott and Horizon completed round robin play with Centennial and Prescott being featured in the state finale. Centennial came in as one of the most decorated and accomplished inline high school programs in the state, region and nation. You wouldn”t have known it from how Prescott took the best shot from Centennial and kept coming back for more. Centennial had problems with Prescott”s speed and defense, as evidenced when Centennial lost to Prescott at the Casey”s qualifier in March. Prescott pressed their strength at the state finals, but it was Centennial’s tremendous amount of big game experience, that pulled Centennial to the state championship title with a 7-5 victory over Prescott.

The district high school division was every bit as exciting as Canyon del Oro, Yuma and Cottonwood went toe to toe in round robin play. Canyon del Oro pretty much had their way with Yuma in round robin play as these two school teams met in the championship final game. The game was tied in the 2nd period 3-3 until Canyon del Oro’s Michael Gonzalez put in the go ahead goal, along with the winning assist from tournament high scorer, Alex Karic. The game featured 2 of the game’s most prolific gate keepers in CDO’s Adam Nichols and Yuma’s David Johnson. So it was Canyon del Oro taking the Arizona State district high school championship over Yuma 4-3.
