4 high schools representing 3 different regions from Arizona took to the floor in Tucson at the Bladeworld arena. 2 new high schools entered the season’s first contest compared to last season. But unlike last season it wasn””t Yuma high school which won the first high school tournament, it was the local favorite, Foothills Southern Kings, from Tucson, that dominated all comers. Foothills definitely made a statement as the top 4 scorers in the entire division were Foothills players. It was Michael Gonzalez leading all scorers from Foothills with an astounding 15 goals and 6 assists in 3 tournament games.
Yuma high school, which came within one goal of winning last season””s first District high school state championship, saw much needed leadership from their standout scoring champion, Kyle Letendre and their stellar goalie, David Johnson. One school that the crowd on hand was very interested to watch was Brophy high school. And as it turned out, Brophy played Foothills closer than any of the other schools in round robin play. Brophy had a good scoring trio in Frank Zimmerman, Ryan Henry and Jimmy Wentworth. Gila Ridge high school had a solid offensive line of Jesse Rooney, Daniel Green and Jon Green and a very experienced goalie in Kirk Dunn.
As the season progresses, more high school teams will be putting their best game on the floor. Last season, Centennial high school established the standard with their incredible big game performances when everything was on the line. Which school will dig deep and find a way to finish the games that count, and grab the state championship title in May. |
