Just when you thought it was safe to put your money down on the high schools that you were sure to have no issues getting on the championship podium at every qualifier, along comes the new kid in town.  Or in this case, Gila Ridge, Prescott and Horizon high schools.  Interesting that each school has pure high school players, and each will contend for the opportunity to participate at the high school national championships in California in May.  The Gila Ridge Hawks played with incredible team spirit as they won-lost-tied their way to the ””B”” championship game and overcame incredible team efforts from Horizon and Lake Havasu high jesserooneyschools to take the tournament championship over number one seed Horizon Huskies 3-1Gila Ridge’s Jesse Rooney was a huge difference maker as he scored 3 of his 5 goals when it mattered most in both their semi-final and final victories.  Horizon””s Kevin Smith helped them to the number one seed on his 3 goals against the Gila Ridge Hawks in round robin play to tie the game which gave them a bye to the finals.

The ””A”” high school division featured, once again, the incredible scoring machine of the Foothills Southern Kings and their tough defense and excellent goalie, Kyle Monus.  It seemed as if nothing would put a kink in the hose of their unending, high octane powerfest…until Prescott highleviwallace school came along.  Yes, the outcome was the same as at Bladeworld, as Foothills triumphed over Prescott high school 9-4 in the championship game, but it was the first time that any high school seemed to seriously challenge Foothills in a finale as Prescott outshot Foothills 20 to 15.  Yes, it was true that Foothills was missing one of their top offensive threats in Alex Karic, however, Prescott high school was also missing one of their top players in Michael Tibbetts, who also has had invaluable big game experience in playing in and winning the first ever high school national championships in ””06 for Prescott high school. Yuma really put the pressure on Foothills in round robin play as Yuma””s outstanding goalie, David Johnson, took 38 shots on net and turned away all but 6 in an amazing display of focus and determination for his school in a game that saw Foothills squeek out a 6-5 win over Yuma.

Once again, all high schools showed up to put their best games on the floor at the Castle.  All 7 teams are scheduled to participate at Q5 Rollerplex.  Will we see continued domination…or changing of the guard?
