azunitedWell, the results are in.  Stop time is a hit, gas dropped below $1.50 per gallon and the AIHA saw the first 3 teams compete in the 8u division.  And for the first time, a middle school team, the Hillcrest Falcons, entered a qualifier and were the talk of the tournament.  As always, the Castle was a wonderful host to the 2nd youth AIHA qualifier of the season.  Of the 6 divisions from the Q1 Bladeworld qualifier, 4 of them saw new team champions as numerous teams moved up to the ””A”” division and were challenged with tougher competition.

8uplayers8u Division

What makes the 8u division so special is the lack of any preconceptions in the eyes of all the youngsters.  They see hockey, they play, it is fun and they have a great time.  Yuma Blaze, Prescott Storm and the team brought together for Q3, the Arizona United, had a great time as all teams scored points.  It did not seem to matter to any of them, as just being able to knock around a puck and, for a real treat, to put the puck in the net.  Top 8u scorer, Stefan Gelosa of AZ United (7 goals, 1 assist) and top goalie, Sarah Jacobelli of Prescott Storm (30 saves, 75 %) had never played in an inline tournament before.

10u Division

Just When it seemed as if Casey’s Crushers would eat all the ice cream and leave none for the others, Team Excalibur stepped up and took away their spoon.  It was obvious, as the qualifier progressed, that wyattentzmingerCasey’s and Excalibur were the 2 dominant teams in the 4 team division.  Top scorers in the division, Keaton Flanders and Jacob Goldsmith (4 goals, 1 assist) of Excalibur, helped them make a statement that they are here and the ice cream will be theirs next time.  The last game of the 6 game round robin came down to the Crushers and Team Excalibur, both undefeated and both with almost identical point differentials.  Neither team had an answer to each other””s very stingy defense as Crushers goalie Shaun MacDonald (18 shots, 17 saves) and Excalibur goalie Wyatt Entzminger (23 shots, 22 saves) did not give one inch on each other as they tied each other 1-1.  The Crushers just eeked out the win and the 10 championship with a +1 point advantage in goal differential over Team Excalibur.

12u Division

In what was a highly contested division of the qualifier was the 12uA division.  All teams in the division had timely scoring and good defense.  But it was Rollerplex Panthers that came out on top with 2 wins and 1 loss to a very determined Yuma Blaze Black squad.  In the game that mattered for 1st and 2nd place, the Panthers had an answer to the Casey””s Crushers well coached and well disciplined team and came out on top by the score of 7-3. The potent scoring attack of Panthers Rob Goldsmith (4 goals, 3 assists) and Chad Colwell (3 goals. 3 assists) were simply too much for the other teams in the division.

The 12uB division, where 3 of the 4 teams had identical 2 win and nicksetzer1 loss records, the Sharp Shooters emerged as the the number one team.  Prescott Storm made a big statement with an incredible 5 to 4 win over the Sharp Shooters, but because of a heartbreaking 6 to 7 loss to the Casey’s Crushers Red earlier, had to settle for 2nd place.  Prescott””s John Gallo, who had taken a season off since scoring the winning goal for the Storm””s state championship sudden death overtime victory in the ””07 state finals, was the division””s top scorer with 5 goals, 4 assists.  Sharp Shooters goale, Nick Setzer led all goalies with 31 saves and a 77.5% save average.

14u Division

As of right now, there is perhaps no front line in the 14u division so clearly dominant as the Rollerplex Panthers.  Panthers line of Robbie Goldsmith, Zack Soucie, Jayme Haveman and Reed Bazso, who were the division””s top scorers, throttled both the Yuma Blaze Black and Team Excalibur.  And with the standout goaltending of Tim Harlin (29 saves, 85%), the Panthers strolled through the division without a hicup on their way to winning the championship.

carusoFor the first time in AIHA history, a mainly middle school roster of kids from Hillcrest middle school, entered an AIHA qualifier.  So as not to spoil there arrival to the AIHA party, they went undefeated and took the 14uB division championship over the Casey’s CrushersHillcrest’s Kasey Caruso and Crushers Alex MacDonald both went toe to toe as their team””s and the division””s top scorers.  It was unfortunate that the game was the first of the division because it contained all of the drama and excitement of what we can expect from them in matchups down the road.  All teams in the division had top end goaltending as Hillcrest’s Dillon Klarer posted a division best 50 saves and an 88% save average.

16u Division

Clearly the division boiled down to Team Excalibur and Rollerplex Panthers for the championship.  However, the 14uA division champs from the Bladeworld qualifier, AZ Alliance, would not go away quietly, as they took the best shot from the eventual tournament champs, Excalibur, where they eventually did come up short 5-7 in their matchup.  The excitement and buildup to the championship game hscottad all the elements needed for a true championship game and both Team Excalibur and Rollerplex did not disappoint.  Both teams had excellent defense, excellent offense and great coaching.  Even though Rollerplex””s Shea Taylor led all scorers in the division (4 goals, 5 assists), it came down to Team Excalibur””s excellent goalie Austin Scott, who turned in perhaps the performance of the tournament, if not the year, as he simply shut the door, locked it and through away the key on the Rollerplex Panthers as Team Excalibur triumphed over the Panthers 1-0.  If this is what we can look forward to in the 16u division on a qualifier by qualifier basis, we are in for a real treat.
