Foothills and Brophy come up just short in big games
Prescott high school must have known that their previous championship blowout games would only last so long before they would have a large target on their backs as other schools would take aim. Such was the case as Foothills Southern Kings found themselves in a rather precarious position, trying to put the pieces back together when it seemed they had the answers early in the season and the other high school teams were frantically pushing to see if they could keep pace. The complete surprise of the tournament was the performance of the Cottonwood Cougars, who last year struggled in every qualifier that they played in. Not so on the Casey’s court. Cottonwood took the eventual “B” champs to the limit where if it weren’t for Shamrock’s David Deckey’s goal and Kyle Letendre’s assist towards the end of the game, Cottonwood would have been sitting in territory unforeseen in their brief appearance on the inline hockey scene. Their very next game against the Brophy Broncos proved to be a very defining experience. It was the Cottonwood Cougars moment in the sun as their goalie Chris Decker played excellent between the pipes, stopping a very good Brophy bronco team, limiting them to 2 scores. Cottonwood’s Nick Yatsinko (2 goals), Tim Bishop (2 assists) and Kris Fafrowitz (1 goal) stepped up big time to take the game against Brophy 3-2 and a position in the “A” division playoff. Prescott and Foothills were busy cruising through round robin play undefeated and both did indeed meet for an “A” finale that was perhaps the championship game of the season. It turned out to be a battle of defense as neither team could take any offensive advantage of either team’s mistakes. Foothills was not about to let happen to them what occurred at Rollerplex, and Prescott was not about to let happen to them what occurred at the Castle. Both teams were tied going into the 2nd period 2-2 when Prescott’s Jake Lund scored and Joey Jimenez assisted on the winning score that gave Prescott a dramatic 3-2 victory. Before the end of the qualifier, both teams had produced an astounding total of 40 assists. The “B” division playoffs saw the Brophy Broncos outscore the Gila Ridge Hawks in their semi-final. It was Brophy’s Frank Zimmerman who took off his work clothes, threw off his glasses and became superman scoring all of Brophy’s goals to get them into the championship game with the Yuma Shamrocks. In the “B” championship game, it was the top end performance of Shamrock goalie David Johnson’s shutout and the offensive output of their excellent forward Kyle Letendre as they combined to top Brophy 3-0.
This qualifier was very defining for all high schools. Schools were seen making a stand, battling to keep the scores from running away as defense was definitely tighter in all games. With only 2 qualifiers left and players that still need to qualify to get to the finals with their teams, there should be some intense games awaiting at the Castle and Prescott.
